يوضح الشكل التالي التصنيفات العملية والوظيفية لتكاليف التدريب في أربعة أمثلة مختلفة.
المربع (A)
ويضم صنفان فقط من التكاليف، وهي: التكاليف المدعمة وهي التي تشتمل على التكاليف الإدارية، المصروفات العامة، التنمية، التحليل، وأية مصروفات أخرى لا تتعلق مباشرة بتنفيذ البرنامج. والتكاليف التشغيلية والتي تتضمن النفقات والمصاريف المرتبطة بعقد برنامج تدريبي. إلا أن ذلك التصنيف لا يوفر تفاصيل كافية لتحليل التكاليف على الأساس الوظيفي.
المربع ((B:
يعطي تفصيلات أكثر قليلاً، حيث أن التكاليف مقسمة إلى ثلاث فئات: تكاليف القاعة والمكان، التكاليف الإدارية، وتكاليف المحاضر. وهذا التقسيم أكثر فائدة من المربع (A)، ولكنه لا يعطي أي معلومات عن تكاليف إنشاء وتطوير وتقييم البرامج التدريبية.
المربع (C)
يتناول تكاليف الإنشاء والتطوير كموضوع منفصل، بالإضافة إلى التكاليف الإدارية وتكاليف المكان والمحاضر، ولا يتضمن تكلفة التقييم والتحسين للبرنامج.
